English version
Let’s take to the streets! Let’s put an end to this savagery!
This isn’t a ‘refugee crisis,’ but a crisis of solidarity and humanity on our part.
Let’s put an end to this savagery once and for all. Let’s be stronger, saner, and more humane than our insensitive leaders and make it clear they are not representing us.
We must not go on watching this savagery like a TV show, from the comfort of our screens. A click, a comment on social media or a momentary lump in our throats are not enough. This is an extreme situation for hundreds of thousands of people, no different from us.
Even today, even at this moment, they are still arriving, dying on our shores, to our shame. There are thousands of lonely children, without families, many of them prey to the mafias of human trafficking or victims to abuse –much like many women.
Let’s demand that those in political power, both at the national and European level, put an end to this savagery. Their political actions are helping create a humanitarian crisis that is only comparable to that of a wartime. Shame on us, for we have the economic and institutional means to welcome, in an organized, respectful and dignified way, these families who are fleeing empty-handed the horrors of war and terror, leaving a void behind them. When they manage to escape, we detain them, treat them like cattle and deport them to Turkey, a country that shows no respect for human rights. This situation, which violates the basic principles of Asylum Law and the Declaration of Human Rights, is intolerable, and must end immediately.
To the civil society, institutions, political organizations, NGOs, citizens’ associations, media organizations: let’s mobilize, take to the streets and demand the end of this horror. It is time to make our voices be heard for the humane treatment of those seeking refuge amongst us. The European Union must backtrack and use our tax revenue and resources to welcome the victims of violence. It is the least we can do. Let’s put an end to this savagery! Let’s take to the street! Let’s demand a dignified and humane welcome to those in need of Europe’s generosity!
